London: British Summer Time

May 28th – July 8th

It’s back to my favourite city for the summer! Cooler temps and glorious sunshine welcomed me when I landed. Unfortunately, my happiness was short-lived when I arrived at the flat we rented (through Open Rent). The leasing agent was all smiles as he showed me around, and I was a little too jet-lagged to give the flat a really good inspection. However, later that evening, when I went to shower, I found that neither of the showers was in working order—one was scalding hot, set to 50°C (122°F), and the other was ice cold. The oven didn’t work at all, the TV was non-functional, the sofa was broken, and let’s just say the last tenants didn’t clean the place (I found spoilt food, dirty clothing, and mattress pads that were soiled and not fit for anyone to sleep on). I now began the grueling task of making the flat suitable for human habitation! Over the next 10 days, I showered at my yoga studio. I spent my waking hours waiting on workmen and deliveries – and I mean waking hours literally. The leasing agent did not want to come into the city, and deliveries were only available between 5 and 6 am or after 8 pm due to the congestion charge. So much for my “Me” time before all the family and guests arrived.  After two weeks of hell, I finally purchased enough items to make the flat livable for the next 2 months. The good news is that the landlord reimbursed us for those, and granted  some compensation for the time I spent managing the work over 10 days and for the lack of shower and kitchen facilities.  Lots of “Traveling on the Edge” lessons learned!

Now on to cheerier thoughts. My good friend, Karen Porter, popped in for a quick visit while she was visiting friends in England. When we are together, we always have an amazing time. Nothing like a girlfriend weekend to bring out the best (or worst) in me! We stopped at numerous pubs and wine bars and just walked the city. I was sad to see her leave.

A quick change of sheets, and Kalee and the grandkids arrived. When Jack and I planned our year-long adventure, we were scheduled to return at the end of May 2025; however, Kalee made it known that she and the kids would be coming to London for at least a month after school let out, so, of course, we had to stay a little longer. (A month in London with our grandkids—yes please!) Little did we know at the beginning of our trip and planning that our house would not be rented for the year; thus, we returned in March to attend to homeowner duties, and then we would go back to London for the summer.

The Blackburns landed in beautiful sunshine with much cooler temps than back in Houston. A month may seem like a long time, but we had a long list of fun things to do, so every day was filled with exciting adventures. First up was a quick trip to Rovinj, Croatia, which meant we had to travel to Venice to catch our ferry. Case and Georgia Ann were excited to see the “sinking” city. Pizza, Pasta, and lots of Gelato were eaten in a short amount of time. The day we left for Rovinj was sunny and beautiful—that is, until we boarded the ferry for the 3-hour trip to Rovinj. The sky grew darker as we left port, and about an hour into the journey, the storm reached its peak. People were green in the face and leaning into the paper sick bags provided (the boat actually ran out of them).  It was a pretty scary ride, and I began reading the emergency procedures and how to put on a life jacket! The Captain soon announced that we would be hugging the shoreline due to the storm, and all the ports along the Istrian Coast were closed. Thus, we pulled into a hotel dock in Pula and had to walk in the rain to a bus, which would take us the 45 miles to Rovinj. Needless to say, it wasn’t necessarily a fun boat trip. But the next four days were sunny and gorgeous, and the kids had a great time swimming and playing at the beaches.

While Kalee and I were with the kids in Croatia, Jack and Landis arrived in London and had a few nights to themselves to enjoy the pubs and a cricket game.  After a smooth ride back to Venice and a flight back to Heathrow, we were all ready to enjoy all that London had to offer.    Hyde Park was just a few blocks away; hence, many impromptu picnics and walks ensued. Besides seeing all the London iconic landmarks and attractions (Westminster, the Tower, Buckingham Palace, Hampton Court, and the South Bank), we relished the idea of “living in London”, enjoying the less explored areas with lots of walks, museums, markets, an afternoon tea, and of course a few pubs, along with some good Indian food. Case and Georgia Ann’s favourite was the visit to the famous Hamleys toy store. The month seemed to fly by, and soon it was time for the Blackburns to head back to Houston.

The flat seems so quiet without all the commotion—Case filling up on Gail’s chocolate croissants and muffins before he had his normal breakfast. GA lumbering out of bed and being a wee grumpy until she adjusted to the day; then there was no stopping her—she was the first one out the door usually. Now it’s just Jack and me, and we are a little lonely without them. Traveling with our kids when they were young was wonderful, but nothing beats traveling and spending quality time with the grandkids. Many memories were made, and we know they will cherish the special times in London well into their old age.
