London Update – 1st Two Weeks (Aug 15 – 29)

Sept 15 – 30: London

Wow! Did the summer blow by or what?  We are now ensconced in our little 2 bd/2bth flat in Marylebone—a great location in our old stomping grounds from 20 years ago.

What can I possibly say to describe my feelings of being back in the most wonderful city in the world?  I think Samuel Johnson said it best—

“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.” (1777)

Twenty years ago, we left London after being stationed here for three years. Although I have returned almost every summer since then, I have always dreamt of a longer, more permanent stay than a few weeks. I wanted to LIVE in London just one more time. With Jack’s retirement, we decided this would be the perfect time to do so. I found a fantastic flat on Open Rent. Turns out, the owner is a Stewart and a Michigan grad! Moving into Flat 6 1A Montagu Place Greenhaven Ct, W1H 2EP, was a true joy. I don’t think I quit smiling for a week! After a few trips to Primark and John Lewis to make the flat a little more homey (a knife, a pan, a lamp, and a few bath items), Jack and I set our minds to finding workout places. After all, eating fish and chips, steak pies, and lots of clotted cream was going to be detrimental to our waistline. He found a great gym—Fitness First—with weight training and classes similar to his Orange Theory. I found an excellent yoga/pilates studio—Total Chi Pilates.

I bet you are thinking, “Why London?  My answer is always— “Why not?” Then you’re probably thinking, “Why during the bleakest and coldest months? That is an easy answer. Although I love London in the summer and all the fantastic outdoor events and activities around the town, it is often crowded with those pesky tourists, and it can be quite hot with no AC! But Fall and Winter, that’s another story. Actually living here (albeit only 6 months), I have the great privilege of not being a tourist, rushed and hurried to see every historic site, museum, and art gallery (which I could never tire of). Now Jack and I spend leisurely days outside and enjoy the crisp autumn days when the parks and gardens transform into a tapestry of brilliant oranges and fiery reds. We have our everyday routine—a check of the news, a planned workout, cooking/cleaning, etc. But, when the sun comes out in the middle of the day, I pack up my computer and head to Hyde Park and the Serpentine Café, where I sit and people-watch (along with writing this blog). Or, some days, I wander through the streets and admire the beautiful window displays. A few friends have met us for dinners, and we still have a few friends who live or work in London. One of Jack’s CBRE colleagues invited us out for drinks on his boat, which he docked at St. Katherine’s Docks for the month of August. The first few weeks have been busy with basic house stuff – unpacking, settling in, and finding the closest and best pubs! Believe it or not, we found pickleball buddies and play two or three times a week (more on that in the next update). It’s a little different than our old five-minute drive to the courts; we take the tube for 30-40 minutes, then walk to the assigned sports club or school. (The courts are not to USAP regulation, but instead played in a gym on badminton courts with a smaller “kitchen”.  And there are sooooo many colored lines—basketball—black, netball—red, volleyball—green, tennis—yellow, and badminton—white. But we are happy to play no matter where, and we’ve met some great people.

So, our first two weeks have been a whirlwind. We set up the flat to our liking, filled the pantry (thank God Waitrose and Amazon Fresh deliver), and settled into a daily routine. It has been an incredible journey—from Houston to London. Even though there have been some minor snags, we just chalk it up to “living on the edge”.

I am so blessed. I am living my dream. Each day is one of gratitude—even those rainy days. I look back on the last 40 years and still can’t believe how the Lord has blessed me. Jack and I are so thankful for the ability to travel, our health, and our friends and family! Stay tuned for the next two-week update from London!

Cheers

If you haven’t had a chance to read our past blogs about our summer travels, let me give you a quick recap—

Week 1: June 14–23: Queen Mary 2

We left Houston with 5 suitcases:1 large, 2 mediums, and 2 carry-ons. Remember we were packing for 15 months and a range of weather—from the Mediterranean heat, the frigid cold of Scotland, to London’s chilly, wet winters—we had to plan for everything, including formal nights on the QM2!  We boarded Queen Mary 2, settled in, and prepared for our “next chapter”.  I’m not one for “cruising”, but this was not your typical cruise. It’s the Grand Dame of luxury and style. As one prone to seasickness, I never even felt the ship move. Jack said it’s bigger than his aircraft carrier! It was the best way to kick off our 15 months of travel. This should be on everyone’s bucket list!

Week 2–8  June 23–Aug 14: Summer in Europe

We arrived in London for a quick stop (2 days), just long enough to swap out our summer cruise clothes and repack a carry-on with our summer Med clothes. We definitely wouldn’t need our Helly Hansen raincoats and wooly socks for a while! Jack had found a great storage facility to leave our other three bags until our return in mid-August and then on to Croatia (via Venice) and a short five days with an old friend, two weeks hiking the Veneto region, two weeks in Paxos, Greece (our favourite island), and lastly seventeen days in the tiny town in the Dordogne.

Week 81/2 —Aug 14-20: Quick stop in London

After a scorching summer in the Med without a proper washer/dryer, the first thing we did was head to a laundromat to really clean our summer clothes. Imagine wearing the same five outfits for two and a half months! Next was a tedious pack and repack. It was time to retire those sundresses and polo shirts and dust off the wool and waterproof coats. We would be ready for all the weather Scotland could throw at us over the next four weeks (think wet, cold, and colder). While we were hanging out in London, so was Taylor Swift. Jack decided to see what all the hype was about, so he actually bought tickets to see her at Wembley Stadium. Wow, what a performer! The concert was spectacular, but what really amazed both of us was the quality of the venue, superb vendor services, and expedience of the 90,000 fan exit. The Brits really know how to handle crowds; everything was so organized, efficient, and polite.   It was back to the storage unit and off to Edinburgh with our “winter” carry-on. (Oh, by the way, we were corrected on the pronunciation of the capital of Scotland. It is “Ed in brah”).

Week 9—Aug 20 –Sept 15: Scotland

Great trip with Jack’s favourite sister and hubby (Christie & Jim). The Edinburgh Fringe/Tattoo with cousins Andy & Susan was AMAZING! We then scattered the parents’ ashes in the same place as their parents, Carnoustie. The NC500 had some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet. Outside of close quarters in a small car and decisions on temperature controls, it was fabulous. If you haven’t read our blog on Scotland, you might want to.
