Back to Houston

February 11

After traveling Europe & beyond for the past eight months, it was time to return home. Initially, we were not scheduled to return to Houston until mid-to-late summer; however, due to home obligations, we decided to head back and attend to some long-overdue tasks—yard work, pool maintenance, and, of course, our grandkids! We returned to Houston on February 11, and with exactly one week to move everything out of storage and back into the house, catch up on household chores, and a few doctor’s appointments, it was a race against time. But I’m pretty practiced at moving household goods; in fact, this would count as my 28th or 29th move! (I’ve lost count). All those Navy PCS moves prepared me well for a quick unpack and setup. Years ago (when I was much younger), the movers would come, and most boxes would leave with the movers the same day. Within 4-5 days, I was completely unpacked with everything put away, pictures on the walls, and a major grocery run completed—ready for a weekend dinner party.  It sounds impossible, but it’s true. For those of you who know me personally, you might not be too shocked. When it comes to sorting, organizing, and tackling big messes, I am quite the force to be reckoned with. I was on a mission since we were leaving for sunny Florida exactly one week after returning to the States. However, these days, I am definitely a little slower. This time, I only unpacked all the rooms except the guest bedrooms, and yes, there were a few boxes left for me to deal with on our return from our vacation in Florida. Now that I’ve actually written that, it sounds a little funny. We’ve just returned from eight months in Europe, and now we’re going on vacation to Florida? Yes, we had already planned on meeting Jack’s sister and brother-in-law (Christie & Jim) in Captiva, where we have spent years enjoying a beautiful beach and solitude.

Home again!

February18th

After packing the truck with beach chairs & sand toys, food stuffs and wine, and our pickle ball paddles, we set off on that long, tedious trek on I-10. It’s not a pretty road trip by any means. In fact, it’s actually quite dismal and depressing traveling through Louisiana and Mississippi— just a whole lot of swamp! However, Alabama brings optimism, as the Sunshine State is just around the bend.  After a quick stop near Tallahassee, we made our way down to The Villages, where one of Jack’s high school track coaches and a major “Fork in the Road” lived. We have always heard so much about The Villages, a retirement community in the middle of Florida, but have never been there. All I can say is—WOW—it’s enormous! It is the world’s largest 55+ community, spanning 90 square miles across three counties, with 3,500 homes being built this year. Almost 160,000 people reside in this Disney-like development. AND NO, I do not see us moving there anytime soon, but it was good to drive through it and see all the activity centers. I confess, I did think it would be a great place to socialize and play pickle! Ok, I digress. The reason to stop in the area was to see Dick and Lanalee Scott, Jack’s HS track coach. They have an absolutely gorgeous home on one of the 56 golf courses. It was great to hear the old stories of Jack as a high school athlete and witness for myself how much influence this man had on Jack’s life. After a few hours with the Scotts, it was time to meet Wayne (Leroy) at his home, where we would stay the night.  The Navy life has undoubtedly created lifelong friendships. Jack and Wayne go way back to their days at Flight School and living in the Sercone (Named for Sergrad – Selectively Retained Graduates after getting Wings of Gold to instruct flight students) Ranch in Beeville, Texas. The best thing about military friendships is that they transcend geographic boundaries and time. We may not see or even speak to each other for months or years, but we pick up right where we left off as if nothing had changed. That’s exactly what we did with Wayne. Meeting Tar and having dinner with old friends was such a blessing. Thank you, Wayne, for the spare room and the Drambuie! (That’s a whole other story of the past!)

After a good night’s sleep, it was back on the road again as we headed south to Captiva Island. We didn’t know what to expect at the Resort since there had been two major Hurricanes to hit it in the past few years. It was deeply distressing to see the extensive damage to such a beautiful island. The Hilton timeshares were restored, and once inside our condo overlooking the beach, we finally felt that warm, sunny feeling that Captiva Island creates within our souls.

For the next two weeks, we took lots of walks/runs on the beach, watched stunning sunsets with a few green flashes, indulged in copious adult beverages, and played countless games of Pickleball with Christie and Jim. Captiva is a special place for the Stuarts, where almost 40 years of memories have been made.

What’s next for the Stuarts? Tune in for the next post. Two months in Houston, then back to London for the summer!
