Méribel, France

Although our travels have slowed over the past six months, we did take a leap across the pond to ski in France at Les 3 Vallées in March.  I knew I had to say a few words about the tremendous time KK and I had with some of my Phi Delt brothers from Michigan and their wives at one of the best ski resorts in the French Alps. Recommended to me by a couple of friends, we decided to give it a try – and frankly, it exceeded all expectations.

The scope and size of 3 Valleys is almost overwhelming at first – but don’t let that deter you.  There is no shortage of slopes with the area proudly boasting over 370 miles of slopes which are serviced by over 170 lifts, and although there is a wide variety of runs, 50% of the area is Green and Blue runs – so if you love long Blue Groomers, this is the place to go.

Les 3 Vallées ski area brings together three iconic areas: Courchevel in the Saint-Bon valley; Méribel and Méribel-Mottaret in the Allues valley; and Les Menuires and Val Thorens in the Belleville valley.  We opted to stay in Meribel, which turned out to be a delightful location that offered the ambiance of a small-town Alps setting with easy access to the entire complex from the middle valley.  Staying at Chalet Mariefleur with 5 ensuite bedrooms, we also had a hot tub, sauna, steam room, and media room – all with the benefits of a live-in couple who provided hot breakfast, sweets on return in the afternoon, and full-service dinners – I should note with all the wine you could drink! SNO Ski Holidays assisted in identifying the chalet, and Ski World  was the actual property manager.  Both UK based companies, I would recommend both for your search.  Our chalet was just 1000m (.6 miles) from town – making it a short walk or bus ride.  We rented our equipment from Precision Ski at the base of four main lifts, and with ski storage only €3/day, getting on the slopes in the morning and off at night was a breeze – with no need to lug our skis and boots around.

The on-slope eating experience was unbelievable with superb lunches and beautiful views at a wide variety of locations.  We generally favored the more casual restaurants … but it’s all personal preference as many locations are a true destination and require reservations.

Logistically, getting to the 3 Valleys is pretty easy if you’re adventurous, as it’s just about 2 – 3 hours from either Geneva (85 miles) or Lyon, FR (120 miles).  We flew from Houston on BA via London to Geneva, using cheap miles since we booked early.  There is a wide variety of transportation vendors to get you from the airport to the slopes, which includes Ben’s Bus (economical shared transfers recommended by a friend), Alps2Alps  (a large company across the Alps), and dozens of others. We opted to use Alps2Alps private vans for our traveling parties, which worked for us but not without some minor issues.

Should you go?  Short answer “yes” – if you have the time and can afford the flight over, as once there, you will most certainly save money!  Let’s face it, skiing in the U.S. is pretty darn expensive, and the experience can be lacking.  Consider this for why a trip to 3 Valleys may be worth it:

  • Lift tickets are about $75/day (6-day ticket)
  • Lift lines, the 2nd week of March, averaged 2-3 minutes.
  • Vast options for skiing – you could ski the entire week and still leave half of the area untouched.
  • Long runs, which, in my mind, are unmatched at most places in the U.S.
  • Real food on the slopes – and numerous options.
  • Quaint alpine towns to explore across the area.
  • Spectacular scenery, plenty of snow, and a long skiing season.
  • The experience – skiing in the Alps is something you should do at least once!

Final word – I’d go again in a heartbeat!
